Movie Earnings: Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)

DC’s Road to Success or Beginning of Its Downfall?

As much as we love DC Comics, we have to admit their movies haven’t been the best over the years.

Some classics either take us back to incredible memories or make us remember that those films should stay buried in our brains without possibilities of return.

This dichotomy between good and bad has made people not expect too much from their movies, but we all have to agree that the “Dark Knight Trilogy” was something else we should never forget.

But what about DC Extended Universe and all the movies taking part in it? Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice isn’t the first one, but the film probably brought more people to start trusting DC a bit more.

Here, we will go over the details of the movie and see how well it did when it was released.

Plot Summary: Get to Know the Film

First, you must know that this second film for the DC Extended Universe will have some spoilers since you should have watched the first one, “Man of Steel,” from 2013.

If not, we invite you to do so and judge by yourself what we consider an average movie from the company so far.

Superman’s incredible power changed the world after being completely revealed in the previous film.

As a result, Metropolis residents and billionaire Bruce Wayne witnessed the change of society and how dangerous and yet, fortunate it was for them to have Superman in their world.

Two years later, the love story that was introduced to us in the first film with Superman being hidden and helping people and in the past few years comes to an end when he is involved in international politics.

Many lives were lost to terrorists and rebels as well in the process of stopping the villains that invaded Earth looking for Superman.

Lois Lane, a journalist and love interest of our superhero, attempts to clear her name in the process.

Senate Hearings and medical are trying to force Superman into the system. At the same time, Batman (Bruce Wayne) intensifies his war against crime to find a way to end the threat that Superman represents to the planet, according to him.

However, our villain in the movie is Lex Luthor, an old-time character in DC Comics.

Do the two superheroes, Batman and Superman, end up joining forces? Or is it the downfall of humanity due to their differences?

Since Batman v Superman is a direct sequel to the previous film, you will always have to watch the first one in order to understand the entire concept of the movie.

That being said, the actors and actresses involved in it as the main cast are:

  • Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman.
  • Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman.
  • Amy Adams as Lois Lane.
  • Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor.
  • Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth.
  • Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman.

Behind the Scenes of DC’s Hit

No matter what people say, bringing a superhero movie to life is never easy, and it involves a lot of money as well as people.

For Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Zack Snyder took the role of director while Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer made sure to write the movie.

Charles Roven and Deborah Snyder took the role as producers while Larry Fong handled the cinematography.

Unlike Marvel’s films, DC Entertainment isn’t the only production company involved. Warner Bros. Pictures, RatPac-Dune Entertainment, Atlas Entertainment, and Cruel and Unusual Film are also part of the production.

However, the distribution is unique for Warner Bros. Pictures.

In 2013, Warner Bros. revealed that Zack Snyder and David S. Goyer would be returning for a “Man of Steel” sequel. This was the first time Batman v Superman would start to see the light.

Snyder was present at San Diego Comic-Con International, where he said that Superman and Batman would meet in the film.

Principal photography involving the main cast began in May 2014 in Detroit, Michigan.

Meanwhile, the additional filming began in Chicago, Illinois, in November 2014.

Several locations were involved in the making of the movie, including Yorkville, New Mexico, and the South Pacific, among others.

Earnings & Salaries: How Successful Was It?

Since many expectations were set for the movie, it didn’t disappoint at its box office, but it did fall behind with other superheroes movies later on.

During its opening day in the USA and Canada, it grossed $81.5 million and moved to $166 million for the opening weekend total.

With the rest of the territories, the movie grossed $422.5 million for its worldwide opening.

Batman v Superman caught up with some big movies, and by the time of its release, it even reached a fifth place as the biggest opening weekend of all time.

However, the movie experienced a poor Friday-to-Sunday hold and even set a record as the worst superhero movie drop from Friday-to-Sunday.

The decline of the movie by spectators and viewers reached 58%.

In the end, it grossed $873.6 million globally, and based on a $300 million budget, the estimated net profit of the film only reached $105.7 million when other expenses are included in the total cost.

For DC, the big news was about the first reception of the movie, but the bad came not long after when it fell from the ranks and box office.

However, what happened with the actors and actresses involved? Did their salaries flop as well?

The truth is there aren’t reports about their salaries.

It is hard to have the information disclosed to the public, and despite some news about these details, none of them were true.

Ben Affleck and the rest of the actors never disclosed their information either. However, there has been a polemic about Gal Gadot’s salary that was reported $300k for the movie, unlike fellow cast members like Henry Cavill, who presumptively earned over $1.5 million.

5 Interesting Facts About the Film

  • Ben Affleck met Christian Bale, who played Batman for the “Dark Knight Trilogy.” He asked Bale for some advice to what he said to “make sure you can piss in that suit.”
  • Batman wears a voice modulator in this film since Ben Affleck’s voice was too high-pitched for the character.
  • Gal Gadot was asked by a reporter how she would have Wonder Woman’s breasts in the comics (making fun of her small chest). She answered that WW is an Amazonian, and historically, they only had one breast.
  • Superman only has 42 lines of dialogue in the entire movie.
  • For the record, this was the tenth time Batman’s character was portrayed in a movie.
