Movie Earnings: Deadpool (2016)

Will You Die Watching It or For Not Doing It?

Have you ever thought about watching a movie that covers comedy, action, some R-rated scenes, and a kind of gore? Well, if you have or not, Deadpool is definitely the definition of the mix of all these genres.

It is a bit hard to mention whether this film was popular or not, but if we follow fans’ and viewers’ opinions when watching it, let’s say that its reception was quite good to what most people expected. Still, the plot and entire production are a bit questionable.

Adding a biased opinion here, we quite like the film, and as one of the few anti-hero movies (compared to the superhero ones), we were happy with the result.

Did we laugh? Pretty much. Did we feel the action? You bet!

However, we are not here to tell you why you should watch it or not. Instead, we are up for the challenge of going over the details of the film and leaving some information that can be an addition to making your own decision to give it a try.

And if you have already watched it, these facts will complement what you know about it.

Deadly Plot & Cast: A Look at the Film

What about starting with the basics before jumping to all the numbers the box office and earnings will cover? Learning about the film.

Believe it or not, this is usually our favorite part when reviewing films because although we don’t tend to include spoilers, it is fun to go over the plot and cast once more, especially when it is for an introduction like this.

So, focusing on Deadpool and its plot, this is what you can expect (or already know) about the film.

The movie has Wade Wilson as its main character. He is a small-time mercenary that falls in love with a woman called Vanessa after he meets her.

Everything goes well with his romance, and after being blessed with a happy life, he is, unfortunately, diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The situation looks grim until a man shows up who claims Wilson can be cured by a treatment that grants him superhuman abilities.

Although he was reluctant in the beginning, Wilson meets Ajax, the man behind this project, and decides to take part in it. He didn’t know initially that the treatment would require him to become a mutant, and he will have to go through painful tests to determine his mutant abilities.

In addition to the painful process, Ajax is also a sadist, which brings Wade with horrible tests and experiences to the point of being severely disfigured by the treatment.

However, in the benefit of the treatment, he also gained accelerated healing powers.

Due to the results of the test, Ajax attempts to make Wilson a prisoner, but fortunately, Wade manages to escape. With a new set of mind and face, Wade decides to find Vanessa and get her love back and make Ajax accountable for the damage he caused.

It may not be easy to kill Ajax, considering he is also a mutant, and the fact superheroes Colossus and Negasonic continue getting in the way doesn’t help at all.

However, Wade is determined, and with his new goals defined, he opts for a new alias: Deadpool

The film is full of surprises, including skipping the superhero film formula, seeing how people kill Deadpool (or not?), and many other scenes you will enjoy.

In case you are not that aware of the part of the mutant, Deadpool is actually part of Marvel Universe as one of the main anti-heroes in the universe and is closely related to the “X-men” in both comics and recent films featuring the group.

This means you have a wild ride ahead, and although it isn’t required to watch the previous “X-Men” films, it wouldn’t hurt to do so, especially with Hugh Jackman being part of the cast.

Talking about the cast, who decided to join this anti-hero film out of the ordinary with the current superhero industry?

Well, the cast isn’t disappointing:

  • Ryan Reynolds as Wade Wilson/Deadpool.
  • Morena Baccarin as Vanessa.
  • Ed Skrein as Francis Freeman/Ajas.
  • T.J. Miller as Weasel.
  • Gina Carano as Angel Dust.
  • Brianna Hildebrand as Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
  • Stefan Kapičić voices Colossus.
  • Leslie Uggams portrays Blind AI.

Other secondary and even main cast members are being excluded here, but we made sure to mention the most relevant ones for you to know the cast you should be familiar with before jumping into the film.

Deadpool’s Production & Team Behind Cameras

The cast will always be a crucial part of the film. After all, who would bring to life the characters and do it as well as possible?

We won’t get tired of mentioning this, but adding something more is: You need great production and hundreds of people behind cameras to make films happen as well, and Deadpool wasn’t, of course, the exception.

Although Deadpool is a character from Marvel, the rights belonged to 20th Century Fox by the time this film was released. This means the production company included it instead of the now monopoly Disney has today.

However, Marvel Entertainment was still involved along with Kinberg Genre, The Donners’ Company, and TSG Entertainment.

Tim Miller directed the film while Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick took the roles of writing the script.

In the production, Ryan Reynolds also took part besides acting as the main character alongside Simon Kinberg and Lauren Shuler Donner.

The cinematography was in charge of Ken Seng, and Julian Clarke handled the edition.

The music is a masterpiece by Tom Holkenborg, and 20th Century Fox handled the film’s distribution worldwide.

The production, or more like the development of the film, isn’t recent.

In fact, its planning started back in 2000 and 2004 when David S. Goyer and Ryan Reynolds himself were working on the film.

However, although Fox was interested in the character, Deadpool and Ryan Reynolds playing him only got a cameo in the 2009 film, “X-Men Origins: Wolverine.” Though, the introduction of the character in this film expanded the production for a future one.

It took a while to write the script and start the pre-production, which is why we are taken to 2015 when more cast members joined the film, and the principal photography began on March 23, 2015, having Vancouver as one of the main places and scenarios.

This continued until the teaser trailer was released, and the world premiere was set on February 8, 2016.

Let’s Get Down to Numbers: Box Office & Salaries

Deadpool was quite a success considering that its budget was set at $58 million in terms of numbers. No less but no more either.

When it comes to the grossing, the United States and Canada hit the $363 million mark while the rest of the territories added another $420 million for a total crossing of $783 million.

The opening weekend was a success worldwide and even became the highest-grossing “X-Men” film and the ninth highest-grossing for 2016.

Although people were quite expecting the film, the studios couldn’t predict such a good reception based on the budget and how much it grossed.

Thus, it’s very fair to say the film didn’t disappoint and even competes with direct Marvel films produced with Walt Disney.

The distribution of the movie in other formats like DVD and Blu-Ray also came with a rise in the earnings-related to the name and character.

Based on some statistics, Deadpool’s character and comics hit a new milestone in sales during this time, both digital and regular comics.

So unlike what many believe, Deadpool was indeed a good surprise.

Now, let’s focus on the actors and actresses.

Considering that the budget was set for $58 million, the isn’t much money involved in the salaries, but it doesn’t mean they weren’t properly paid for their roles.

According to reports, Reynolds was paid $2 million in salary for the film.

However, he earned much more than that. How? By the fact that he was the only actor who could apply for box office bonuses and backend compensation.

This means that following the movie’s success during its release and in all the time it lastest in cinemas; he earned about $1-2 million in addition to his salary. Unfortunately, we cannot confirm the veracity of this information since the details of how much he made from the box office haven’t been disclosed.

Other members like Morena Baccarin and Ed Skrein were paid about $500.000 for their roles, but the information hasn’t been disclosed when it comes to the rest of the cast members.
