Since not many people seem to take the time to learn about one of the people behind the big company and the most influential one at that, we have decided to dedicate him some time, including his life, success, and net worth.

Therefore, get ready for the ride of knowing how this man built an empire and how much he has earned thanks to it.

What You Must Know About Sergey Brin

A bit of a late introduction, but Sergey Brin is an American magnate born on August 21, 1973, in Moscow, Russia.

His parents, Mikhail and Eugenia Brin are both Jewish and graduated from Moscow State University. His father is now a retired mathematics professor at the University of Maryland, while his mother is a researcher at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

Sergey, aged six years old, fled Russia with his family to escape Jewish persecution. They eventually arrived in Maryland, where his father was appointed as a math professor at the University of Maryland. During these difficult times, the Brin family received support and assistance from the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society.

Sergey showed a remarkable aptitude for solving math problems early in his life, which isn’t that surprising considering his father’s talent and dedication to the field.

This reached the point that although Sergey attended kindergarten at Paint Branch Montessori School, Adelphi, Maryland, his father tutored at home, where he encouraged his analytical skills and instilled an interest in computers.

He attended Eleanor Roosevelt High School, Greenbelt, Maryland, and then entered the University of Maryland in September 1990.

He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the Department of Computer Science in 1993, and during the same year, he interned at Wolfram Research, the developers of Mathematica.

Brin started his graduate studies in computer science at Stanford University with a fellowship from the National Science Foundation. He was currently on leave from Stanford University’s Ph.D. program in 2008.

Sergey graduated college in May 1993 and was accepted into a Stanford University computer science graduate school.

At an orientation program for new students, he met fellow student Larry Page. This friendship is what would change everything for World Wide Web. Although both partners were unable to gel at first, things smoothed and allowed them to reach the massive goal Google is today.

Starting Google & Search Engine Innovation

Although many would believe that Sergey was the first person of the duo to think about the idea, Page was the one who came up with the idea of using external links to assess the website’s quality.

Larry started working on a paper as part of his Ph.D. thesis to describe a new method of crawling the web. In the process, Sergey began to collaborate on the thesis and contribute with his knowledge to complete it.

Not long after, BackRub was soon launched by them. It was the first search engine to use backlinks to determine the popularity and importance of a site.

By the time, they also co-authored a paper entitled “The Anatomy and Function of Large-Scale Hypertextual Search Engine,” which was the most downloaded scientific document on the Internet in its time.

The duo formed and founded Google Corp. in September 1998, under the initial domain name “Googol.” This is a number consisting of one followed by one hundred zeros.

They raised $100 thousand from one of their Stanford graduate professors, David Cheriton. Cheriton’s $100,000 investment would ultimately be worth more than $2.3 billion. Andy Bechtolsheim was also a co-founder at Sun Microsystems. They raised $100,000.

It wasn’t until six years later that Google went public and allowed individuals to start enjoying its functions in August 2004.

Google is today the most prominent Internet company with a monopoly on online search and a duopoly (with Facebook) in online advertising. It offers many products, including search, maps, and YouTube, that reach more than 1 billion people each day.

Google’s monopoly tactics, tendencies to crush competitors, and insistence on imposing arbitrary rules and requirements onto websites and apps have been criticized whatsoever.

In 2019, various antitrust investigations against Google were launched by multiple organizations, including the FTC and DOJ.

Going back to Sergey and the man behind this idea being possible, he served as the company’s chief technology officer for ten years. He was promoted to President of Alphabet, Google’s parent company.

However, he stepped down from the position in 2019. Brin is also known as a major contributor to the robotics lab and a supporter and advocate of alternative energy consumption.

He is working to solve the world’s climate and energy problems through Google.org, a philanthropic arm. His personal assets have been invested in venture funds and investments in clean technology.

Sergey’s Net Worth: Millions or Billions?

We will never get tired of telling you this, but regardless of it being millions or billions, the truth is that it is a lot of money no matter what.

But in this case, you have to go for the latter option: billions.

Sergey Brin is actually one of the wealthiest people in the world. To this date, July 2021, his net worth ranges at $111.1 billion, according to Forbes.

This year has been a wild ride for the magnate, considering that his income was steady over the past five years.

He wasn’t losing money, but he wasn’t earning much compared to other entrepreneurs like Bezos or Musk.

However, his net worth peaked in 2021 when it initially went from $49.1 billion in 2020 to $89 billion in January.

We just answered how much he is worth now, but where does all this money come from? Well, only Google.

It is primarily thanks to his shares from the company and Alphabet, Google’s parent business.

In Alphabet, he owns 6% of the company, and over the past decade, he has sold over $9 billion worth of shares from Google and Alphabet.

Google is definitely a massive company, and since it generates over 4 billion searches, it leads the whole business to generate more around $130 billion in annual revenue.

However, besides his companies, Sergey is known for investing in businesses that seem more than profitable.

In fact, he has equity stakes in Tesla and 23andMe since he and his partner, Larry, invested over $40 million in the company back in 2006, making them one of the people who received original and unique models of the company.
