It’s been a while since we have watched Despicable Me 3. However, our opinion about the film continues to be the same: It could have been better.
It is tough to start this article with such a statement. However, we don’t want to prolong our opinion until the end of the article since it wouldn’t make sense.
Also, it doesn’t matter what we think about it, but what you consider after watching it or maybe when you decide to give it a try because we suggest you go and watch it even after what we said. There’s no better opinion than yours according to your preferences.
Now, our focus isn’t to go over the details of the films in terms of how good it was or not. Instead, we are more interested in giving details about its earnings, how big it was during its release, and those who took part in this sequel.
So, we won’t lose track of the usual information provided, and we are confident you will like it quite a lot.
Same Big Cast? – Despicable Me 3 Plot & Members
With the adventures of our favorite villain, not so villain now, the story itself doesn’t really need an introduction.
However, like every sequel or different film, you get new characters and some additional details. With them, the cast is also expanded.
To enter the topic of the film, we can focus on the plot before mentioning the members that took part this time around.
We are introduced to Balthazar Bratt, a delusional 1980s bad boy who is the new super-villain terrorizing people worldwide and planning schemes that are nothing but impossible to stop.
With the villain on the loose, super-agents Gru and Lucy are fired from the Anti-Villain League after a failed attempt to arrest the big criminal.
Gru, now jobless and depressed, is left without a purpose in his life. However, the news of a twin brother in another country will eventually ignite a subdued but profound interest to continue the family’s traditions.
But is his brother what he would expect? Or a disaster? What about them being a match made in Heaven? You will need to watch it to discover it.
For this film, the cast of voice actors pretty much remained the same, but with the addition of some main members to voice the new villain and other characters.
Thus, you can expect quite the same as our previous article focusing on “Despicable Me 2”:
- Steve Carell as Gru.
- Kristen Wiig as Lucy.
- Trey Parker as Balthazar Bratt.
- Miranda Cosgrove as Margo.
- Dana Gaier as Edith.
- Nev Scharrel as Agnes.
- Pierre Coffin as Minions.
- Steve Coogan as Fritz.
- Julie Andres as Gru’s Mom.
Other voice actors and actresses like Jenny Slate, Michael Beattie, and Andy Nyman took part in the film as well.
Inside Its Production: Behind the Animation
Having reached this point, it is only natural to talk about the people behind the voice actors, cameras, and all the production. Which, believe it or not, takes quite a lot of work.
Sometimes, animated films can be more exhausting to produce than regular ones, and this is due to the photography, extra work, and how everything needs to come together.
In the case of Despicable Me 3, it wasn’t different.
For this film, Pierre Coffin and Kyle Balda took the roles of directors, while Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio wrote it.
In the main production, Chris Meledandri and Janet Healy were the only ones involved.
In edition, Claire Dodgson took the job, and Heitor Pereira and Pharell Williams took the music.
But what about the companies?
Universal Pictures and Illumination were the production companies, while the first one also distributed the film.
With a second part of the original film released in 2013, why did a third come out four years later?
Despite what people believe, this film was confirmed back in 2013 when the second was released, and the development started at the time as well.
However, it wasn’t until 2016 that the casting and voice actors were decided once more, and the music started to be written.
The process to make the film wasn’t as hard as the previous ones since all actors and actresses that still had a role in the animated movie returned without many difficulties to the respective ones.
During the marketing phase, the company went through more work than usual by trying to boost the film’s expectations in the early stage.
In the end, the film was released in June 2017, being its first release on June 14. Followed by other premieres on June 24 and 30.
Let’s Talk About Numbers: Budget & Earnings
When you want to know the popularity of a film, you usually focus on its earnings and critics.
In the case of Despicable Me 3, the film broke a new record from its prequels as the budget was set for $80 million, but the box office hit the $1 billion milestones worldwide.
Breaking down this, in the United States and Canada, about $264 million were grossed, while the rest of the territories contributed $770 million.
By the time of its release and during the year, the film ranked fourth as the highest-grossing film of 2017, and the same place was earned but for the highest-grossing animated film of all time.
With the expenses and payments, the film’s net profit was set at $366.2 million after considering budget, marketing, actors’ and actresses’ salaries, ancillary revenues, and more.
But besides the earnings grossed, was it actually popular with the public? That’s questionable.
The average rating in Rotten Tomatoes only hit 5.70/10 stars, and the critical response by fans was positive, yet everyone felt it wasn’t better than the previous ones.
In other websites like IMDb, the rating stands at 6.3/10, and Metacritic stands with 49 out of 100 based on several critics.
It was confirmed that those who gave great reviews were the younger fans of the franchise, while adults or youngsters felt disappointed with the quality of the storyline.
Of course, talents like Julie Andrews made the story amazing for some nostalgic people who know the great actress, but others just didn’t feel like it was worth their time.
In our opinion, again, it could have been better.
Finally, for the salaries, we are unable to provide much information.
The cast salaries weren’t disclosed, and the only one who reportedly earned millions for his recurring role was Steve Carell, with about $12 million in earnings.
